Pondering the meaning of soulmate? You're in the right place!
I've dedicated this entire site to the question of soulmates. Warning: my definition is different than most.
The meaning of soulmate, in my view, is not a question about another person. It's really a question of Self. An invitation to begin exploring the mysteries of our souls.
In other words, who we really are, what we stand for and why we're here. The more we explore the answers to these questions, the more likely that we'll attract our other beloved: a true soulmate.
I want each page of this site to have original information. For further insights and definition of soulmate, I encourage you to check out What is a soulmate. You might also find some inspiration in Soulmate quotes. Have fun!
If you read my bio on this site, I'm a pretty pragmatic gal. Got the MBA. Did the corporate thing. I have a woo-woo meter, and don't get all misty eyed about the meaning of soulmate.
Having said that, I do sincerely and passionately believe in soulmates and in reincarnation, and that we are reunited with other souls in order to pick up where a relationship left off in a previous life.
We do this, so that we can solve any conflicts we have, or re-pay karmic obligations. Once there's no more anger or power struggles to work out, what's left over is love and THIS loving state and not the hot rush of desire is the real meaning of soulmate.
First, my research on the meaning of soulmate has shown that we have a number of soulmates, which can be not only romantic partners, but friends and family! I also personally believe in animal soulmates.
On romantic love, some find soulmates easily. For many others, our souls require more of us first and there's a quid pro quo of sorts. It's different for everyone but essentially, in order to have a soulmate, we each need to become more whole ourselves.
Relationships we enter into when we're just looking to fill a hole will be a karmic (not a soulmated) relationship. It's not that the ‘lucky’ others that find their soulmates easily get out of the work. They likely just did it earlier in their lives, or in a past life and the easy soulmate reunion is a gift from their soul.
If we're unhappy in our lives, and yearn for a relationship to lift us out of our melancholy, we'll attract someone else who feels incomplete as well. What starts as a romantic rush will unravel as we become entangled in the unloved parts of ourselves.
Even worse, what can happen is that the person credited with ‘saving’ someone, can end up getting blamed in the end. It's the flip side of the same coin.
A key assumption in the meaning of soulmate then, is that of personal responsibility for the state of our lives. This doesn't mean self-blame, more of an acceptance of reality and the willingness to do whatever we need to do within our hearts in order to attract genuine love (or whatever we say we want) into our lives.
Our souls want us to find our soulmates. They want it so much for us, that they create the exact things that will push us on to greater growth, even if it doesn't always feel good at first.
I also sincerely believe, to the bottom of my toes, that each relationship, as long as there are two willing parties with an open heart, can transform a challenging karmic relationship into a soulmated one. Otherwise, I wouldn't have created this site!
If you're single, think of it this way. Begin to tie the meaning of soulmate to your own unique soul mission. Said another way, if you want a soulmate, get to know your soul.
My research says that we meet our soulmates while we're actively pursuing our purpose in this life. By becoming curious about our souls, we become stronger and more joyful whether or not we're with someone and our happiness acts as a beacon for our intended soulmate, who will be happy on their own as well. When that happens, he or she is likely to slip into our lives naturally.
Watch the movie Under the Tuscan Sun for a luvly example of how this happens, set in luscious, spectacular Italy. Be sure to check out the real Frances (main character) in the movie.
